D-Link Xtreme DIR685 Digital Picture Frame, Wireless Storage And Router

The D-Link DIR-685 is not your average digital photo frame. In fact you could probably mount an argument that this is the least of what it does.

The DIR-685 is first and foremost an 802.11n Wi-Fi router and coming from a company like D-Link, that's no surprise. However you can extend its functionality into a that of a network storage device through the addition of a laptop hard drive. Sharing of other devices is also possible through the USB ports available on the device.

The digital picture frame component is available though a tiny 3.2 inch LCD screen. It runs the FrameChannel software to provide added functionality.

Granted, the D-Link DIR685 Digital Picture Frame may not be for everybody, but it's a pretty cool gadget.

Luxentia DPF080-BM 8" Digital Photo Frame

The 8 inch DPF080-BM Digital Picture Frame from Luxentia looks a little different to products offered by many of its competitors. It sports a brushed metal facade and silver lining (I thought only clouds had a silver lining) which the marketing material calls "elegant". I guess it comes down to taste, but I have to admit Luxentia's DPF080-BM does have a classy look about it.

The eight inch display has a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The DPF080-BM comes with 256MB of internal (flash) storage which is enough to hold about three thousand photos in 800 x 600 resolution. The built-in multi-format card reader is compatible with a whole swag of memory card types like SD, MS, CF and MMC among others. You can also plug in an external USB flash drive, giving you even more flexibility in how you decide to manage your digital pictures.

In addition to the display of still digital images, this frame also supports video (MPG, AVI) and audio (MP3) playback. The frame is fitted with stereo speakers to support the audio playback.

Customer feedback has been positive. Funnily enough, the thing they like the most is the presentation - that elegant brushed metal facade again.

The Luxentia DPF080-BM digital photo frame comes with a remote control and on-screen menu function. Prices online are around the $50 mark as of writing.
